Advent is about preperation. Obviously about preparation for Christmas; with the enormous food deliveries, the negotiations about who is having Christmas dinner where, the nightmares about trying to find a present that says just the right thing again this year. But all that preparation distracts us from the fact that Advent is a significant season in itself.
But the significance of advent is actually closely connected to the preparations for Christmas. Because in the same way that we are getting ready for one special day on the 25th, we are reminded that through our lives we are getting ready for one very special day when the King born in a manger returns on the clouds of heaven.
The ‘Advent Conspiracy’ is a beautifully simple idea that encourages us to change the way we prepare for Christmas, and in so live more in keeping with the spirit of Advent. It wants to excape from the commercial hyjackking of this Christian Festival, and encourage us to spend less, but give more; to give love and to give ourselves as much as we give stuff. It is far more in keeping with the first Christmas – where we celebrate Gods’ giving of himself to the poor for the sake of the whole earth.
Have a look at the Advent conspiracy website for ideas about how to give rather than to spend, and may our advent preparation prepare us better for that day when God’s Kingdom comes, and Justice shall be seen in all the earth.
